A former beauty queen turned young women’s advocate and social entrepreneur, Bessie A. Winn-Afeku is on a purpose driven mission to educate, inspire, and empower. With an extensive background in beauty and pageantry, Bessie was also contestant in the 2003 Miss Georgia USA pageant and a finalist in the Today's Black Women Magazine Beauty Competition. This former Miss Black Georgia USA has truly breathed life into the clichéd beauty pageant phrase, "Make the World a Better Place".
Bessie has been featured in periodicals such as VIBE Vixen, the Atlanta Voice, Rolling Out, and was featured in the July 2007 issue of EBONY magazine.She is a professionally trained and accomplished actress, having appeared alongside Vivica A. Fox in the film Three Can Play That Game, as well as having landed roles on HBO and BET, independent films, regional theater productions, and commercials.
Motivated by her own past experiences, strong conquering of low self-esteem and survival of a physically and verbally abusive relationship, Winn-Afeku has dedicated herself to crafting and spreading messages of healthy self-esteem, self-acceptance and ultimate goal setting for teen girls and young women.
A native of Ghana West Africa, Winn-Afeku moved to Georgia at the age of seven years old. Despite being a very good student and social butterfly, Winn-Afeku still often struggled with esteem issues.
Fast forward to the present and Winn-Afeku is a poised and coveted motivational speaker, having garnered praises from the likes of Afeni Shakur, mother of the late Tupac Shakur, among others. Additionally, she's spoken at hundreds of youth events, including, Self Esteem/Self Image workshop for the I AM B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L. Pajama Jam, 4th Annual Girls of Greatness Abstinence and Teen Pregnancy Prevention Conference, 1st Annual Afeni Shakur-Davis Mentoring Conference, and the 2006 Cool Girls Inc. Graduation.
Winn-Afeku is also the creator of the annual See It, Stop It, Prevent It annual teen dating violence seminar, which was started in 2006, during her reign as Miss Black GA USA, and has since been introduced in Hawaii and Washington, DC. Mrs. Winn-Afeku is the founder and Executive Director of The She is Me Program™ which is a non-profit organization that aims to empower disadvantaged young women and ensure high school graduation through workshops, seminars, the arts, and exposing them to various careers, goal setting, and positive role models while developing college readiness. Bessie is also the CEO of B.aWinn Consulting, a consulting firm that specializes in empowering women and young girls to become all they are meant to be in all aspects of their lives through one on one coaching and self development workshops, and programs. Her community involvement and leadership has been acknowledged by several organizations including the Nu Lambda Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Bessie A. Winn-Afeku is a graduate of Georgia State University, where she earned her B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Sociology.
